Create Podcast Video Clips in 3 Easy Steps

Today I’m going to show you a quick video tutorial on how to create video clips from your podcast in three easy steps. I’m so excited to be here with you today and super grateful for your time.

[00:00:33] If you have any questions at all, please feel free to reach out directly. And today’s tutorial is for the Women in Podcasting Network and for Jennifer Hensel. Let’s get into it. So I’m going to show you this tutorial based off of a podcast episode for one of my own podcasts, which is called Happiness Happens.

[00:00:54] I figured I would use my own podcast instead of a client’s podcast or something like that. So [00:01:00] once you have your file set up, it is very, very, very straightforward. As you know, Descript is a text based editing software, which allows you to read the transcript as you’re going through and doing all of your edits.

[00:01:14] What I like to do when I create social media content is simply find the sections in which I want to highlight and pull out as video clips, okay? So you would take this and you would just highlight the section that you want. And then what I do, actually let’s get a more full, complete sentence here. Um, so that’s what I do here.

[00:01:34] Now, one thing, this is just like a quick tip, pro tip, I always add a comment box so that I never lose my, um, here we go, videogram one, let’s just pretend that’s that, so that I never lose my quotes or my clips and I don’t have to go back and do it again. So. That’s just going to save there really quick.

[00:01:54] And then once your section is highlighted, what you’re going to want to do is right click the part that you are [00:02:00] clipping, and you’re going to go down to Clip to Composition, and you can either choose New or Existing. So we can totally choose Existing because that will put it into this composition over here.

[00:02:12] So we can click that, and Let’s do a new composition here, clip, and at the bottom here, it’ll show you a selection added to new composition, so you can open that here. So now what it’ll do is it’ll open it in a separate window, and you’ll see In here. This is my clip and what I’m going to want to do first is resize it so you can click this one here.

[00:02:39] This little button on the top right and you can change the orientation so you can change it from landscape to portrait to square or customize it. It’ll ask you to pick the resolution and then the frame rate as well. Typically, you can just leave all of these stats as is, except for this one here. So let’s say we wanted to take this and turn it into a portrait, which is what you would use for [00:03:00] real size.

[00:03:01] That has resized the canvas. It’s a little bit hard to see, but there’s like a dark black type of canvas here might be a little bit easier to show you like this. There we go. And what we like to do is quite straightforward. So we highlight the whole section. We’re going to copy it. And I’m going to paste it right on top.

[00:03:22] And it’s going to create it as a new additional clip over here. And then what you’re going to want to do is take this and then you just drag it so that it starts at the playhead, it starts at the exact same spot. And now, what you have is two separate frames here. So then once you get to this screen here, you want to just make sure that you have all of this highlighted here.

[00:03:47] That way when you’re making changes, you’re making all of the changes at the exact same time. So this one, I’m going to want to put on the bottom, because you have more space above my head. That’s me, in case you couldn’t tell. [00:04:00] So you have more space above my head there. And then you want to click here, and do the same thing here.

[00:04:07] Move layer up, and then you are going to do this. And you’re just going to drag it so that it’s in place, and that it fills the frame nicely. This one’s a little bit tricky because he’s not fully in the camera properly, so you just want to make sure that your guests are centered, I guess, when you’re, when you’re recording, but it’s not, it’s not that big of a deal because we can always make it work.

[00:04:29] So we’ll do that and then just drag him there and then what we can do here just to make sure there’s more space and make it a bit more balanced. We can move him up a little bit. So now you have me on the bottom and you have him on top and then. What we’re going to do is, we’re just going to add some captions to it, and I’m on a Mac, so you’re going to want to click Command K, and then you can start typing in, you’re looking for, it used to be called Fancy Captions, now they’ve changed it, it’s called Insert Captions, so you just click that, [00:05:00] and then what it does is, is it pulls the captions, Directly from your transcript, and then you can make the, you can make the caption go as long as you want it to, and just a pro tip in order to get the actual formatting of the captions, you’re just going to right click on captions and click on show clip properties, and then what you can do here is you can have it fade in and fade out if you want it to, and you can start to customize this based off of your branding and in your podcast and and all that.

[00:05:28] So let’s say for this one here, I want the text to be in the middle so we can Bring that down there. You can change it to dynamic text. You can change the speaker. Um, you can customize all of this down in here. You can change the font and the size. And then afterwards here, this is where you can kind of go in and, and do all of them.

[00:05:51] You know, specifics. So as you see here, word level animation will give you an active word and it’ll change the color and the font of the active word. You can change the [00:06:00] color and the font of the future word, and then you can change the color and font of the playhead color, which is this pink color here.

[00:06:06] And then you can also give your captions a background as well and a shadow if you want to. So that is how we would do this here. And then I’m going to click right at the beginning here and I’m going to click play. As you can see there, the captions kept going and they were going as I was pressing play.

[00:06:23] And I know you can’t hear it because I have my headphones on, but you can see here the ways in which the captions appear. And you can totally add it and do it and create it however you would like. So that is how you create the video captions. Let me recap for you really quick. The first thing that you’re going to do is open your video file.

[00:06:42] Once you do that, you pick your video clip that you want to turn into a stacked clip like this. You turn it into a new composition. In the new composition, you highlight all of the text by clicking Command A, and then you paste it right on top here. Then you move the video [00:07:00] from the top and the bottom to position your speaker and your host the way that you want it to.

[00:07:05] And then you add your captions by clicking command K, and then you can go into the captions and you can change the way they look. You can change the font and all of that when you’re happy with it. When you’re done with it, you can export this and you can upload it to your favorite podcast platform.
